Nigerian troops kill ISWAP Shura Council member in Kukawa raid

Military forces neutralized Abu Hajara and three other senior Islamic State fighters during a failed attack on a Borno military base on October 31.

Nigerian military personnel operating under Operation Hadin Kai killed a senior member of the Islamic State West Africa Province leadership structure during a confrontation in Kukawa, Borno State on October 31, 2026. The deceased, identified as Abu Hajara, held a seat on ISWAP's Shura Council, the organization's top decision-making body.

Military spokesperson Captain Mohammed Goni confirmed the operation, describing it as a significant setback to the group's command hierarchy. Alongside Abu Hajara, troops also eliminated Abul Walid, described as a prominent field commander with close ties to Ba Shuwa, ISWAP's overall regional leader.

Two high-ranking foreign fighters of Arab nationality were also killed in the same engagement. The confrontation occurred when militants attempted to assault the military installation, an assault that forces successfully repelled.

The operation represents a notable disruption to ISWAP's organizational structure at both strategic and operational levels. The loss of a Shura Council member strikes at the group's core planning apparatus, while the elimination of Abul Walid removes a key field leader responsible for coordinating attacks in the region.

Military officials characterized the incident as dealing damage to both the group's leadership capacity and its ability to mount future operations. Operation Hadin Kai, the joint task force coordinating military response in Nigeria's northeast, announced the results on November 1, 2026, one day after the engagement.

The operation has maintained an active presence in Borno and surrounding areas as part of ongoing counter-insurgency efforts against ISWAP and affiliated groups. Military personnel also recovered weapons and ammunition from the engagement site, though the specific quantities were not detailed in official statements.
