Showunmi Critiques Nigeria's Democracy as a 'Skit'

Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concern over the diminishing engagement in Nigeria's democracy, likening it to a "skit." Speaking in Abeokuta, Ogun State, he highlighted that democracy requires active participation from citizens to prevent politicians from manipulating electoral processes. Showunmi noted that many Nigerians are reluctant to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), which he believes contributes to electoral rigging and inflated vote counts.

He pointed out that approximately 90 million PVCs are unaccounted for, particularly among younger populations. He urged citizens to engage in political parties and spread awareness within their families about the importance of participation.

Additionally, he called on politicians, especially from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to stop blaming the Electoral Act for shortcomings and instead focus on grassroots engagement to build party capacity. Prof. Tund Adebola, the state chairman of Action Alliance, echoed Showunmi's sentiments regarding the need for commitment to democratic practices ahead of the upcoming elections.
