New Tax Law: Nigerians to Pay Extra N45/Litre for Petrol

Starting January 2026, Nigerians may face an additional N45 per liter surcharge on petrol under the new Nigeria Tax Administration Act. The Act introduces a 5% surcharge on refined fossil fuel products, aiming to broaden government revenue streams, promote clean energy adoption, and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The surcharge, part of a tax reform bill signed by President Bola Tinubu, exempts household kerosene, cooking gas, and renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. While the law is set to take effect in 2026, the exact commencement date is pending formal directives.

The surcharge will apply to petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other refined petroleum products produced in Nigeria.
