TUC Rejects 5% Fuel Surcharge, Threatens Shutdown Over Tax Burden

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) rejects the proposed 5% fuel surcharge by the Nigerian government, giving a 14-day ultimatum for its withdrawal. TUC leaders, Festus Osifo and Nuhu Toro, criticize the surcharge, stating that Nigerians are already burdened with various taxes.

The new tax law, set to take effect in January 2026, would add N45 per liter to the price of premium motor spirit (PMS). The surcharge is part of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

TUC threatens to shut down critical sectors if the government fails to withdraw the proposal, citing the additional financial strain on citizens.
