Nigeria's Grid Suffers 88% Power Drop, Recovers After Transmission Faults

Nigeria's electricity generation plummeted from 3,840MW to 477MW on October 19 after multiple grid trippings, but the system recovered to 2,827MW by the…

Nigeria's national electricity grid experienced a severe disruption on October 19 when generation capacity collapsed by approximately 88 percent within hours. Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator showed output falling from roughly 3,840 megawatts at 7am to 477 megawatts by early afternoon, triggering blackouts across parts of the country.

The steep decline raised fresh questions about the stability of the power system, which has faced recurring supply challenges. The crisis stemmed from multiple trippings that occurred on the 330-kilovolt transmission network at approximately 12:40pm that Monday, according to NISO's official statement.

A tripping is an automatic shutdown mechanism that disconnects the grid when faults are detected. The incidents affected a section of the national grid rather than causing a total system collapse, NISO noted.

Several major power generation facilities recorded zero output during the period. Restoration efforts began immediately after the faults were identified.

NISO worked alongside the Transmission Company of Nigeria to implement corrective measures and stabilize the power system. By late Monday evening, generation had dropped to 404 megawatts across five generating companies.

The recovery accelerated overnight as more generation facilities reconnected to the grid. By 7am on Tuesday, October 20, the national grid had rebounded significantly.

NISO reported that 17 generation companies were feeding electricity into the system, with total output reaching 2,827.82 megawatts. This represented an increase of approximately 2,424 megawatts in roughly ten hours but remained about 1,012 megawatts below the pre-incident level recorded on Monday morning.
