Nigeria's AGF Fagbemi Launches Judicial Reforms Initiative

On Wednesday, in Abuja, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, clarified that the ongoing reforms in Nigeria's judiciary are designed to make justice accessible to poor and indigent citizens, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution. Fagbemi inaugurated the Governing Board of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, led by Honourable Justice Sulyman Durosinlohun Kawu, emphasizing the board's role in achieving the administration's legal reform priorities.

He tasked the board with developing strategies to alleviate congestion in detention facilities, expedite court processes, and protect fundamental human rights. Fagbemi highlighted the importance of the Legal Aid Council in ensuring that economic disparities do not obstruct access to justice.

He urged the board to provide strong policy direction and implement operational mechanisms, including the Police Duty Solicitors Scheme and the Court Duty Solicitors Scheme, to fulfill its mandate effectively.
