Nigeria Confirms October 1, 2026, as Public Holiday

Nigeria's next federal public holiday is set for October 1, 2026, which will mark 66 years since the country gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960. The President's administration is expected to officially declare this day a public holiday, following the tradition of previous years.

On this date, workers across Nigeria will stay home while government officials and state institutions hold events to commemorate the occasion. Independence was formally achieved on October 1, 1960, with the first government led by then-Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, representing a coalition of conservative parties.

Each year, October 1 is gazetted as a national public holiday, with parades, cultural displays, and official ceremonies organized by state and federal institutions. Flag-raising events are held across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to celebrate Nigeria's independence.
