Nigeria's Portfolio Investment Surges to $7.09 Billion in Q2
In the second quarter of 2026, Nigeria's portfolio investment inflows rose by 17.6% to $7.09 billion, up from $6.03 billion in the previous quarter, as reported by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This increase of $1.06 billion was primarily attributed to higher inflows into long-term general government debt securities.
The report indicated that portfolio investment constituted the largest component of new financial liabilities during the quarter, significantly surpassing direct investment liabilities, which rose by 11.7% to $1.15 billion from $1.03 billion. The CBN noted that the increase in direct investment liabilities was due to higher reinvested earnings.
Other investment liabilities also saw growth, increasing to $2.75 billion in Q2 from $1.36 billion in Q1, reflecting higher loan drawdowns by the government and other sectors. Consequently, the net incurrence of financial liabilities rose to $10.84 billion from $8.36 billion in the preceding quarter.
Portfolio investment inflows accounted for approximately 65% of total net financial liabilities incurred during the period, despite a decline in Nigeria's aggregate foreign exchange inflows.
