Nigeria's Recycling Rate Below 10%, Experts Warn

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) reported that Nigeria's recycling rate is below 10%, with most recycling activities occurring in the formal sector, which poses risks to public safety. Engr.

Areg Samson Bawa, chairman of the NSE Kaduna branch, highlighted these issues during a public lecture on March 4, 2020, commemorating World Engineering Day. The theme of the lecture focused on smart waste management and the role of artificial intelligence in advancing environmental protection.

Engr. Terlumum Sesugh served as the guest speaker, emphasizing the importance of waste management in protecting public health and preventing environmental pollution.

Bawa noted that Nigeria lags behind other countries in modern waste management practices and called for proactive government measures to address waste management challenges. The event aimed to inspire young people to pursue careers in engineering and technological innovation to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
