Nigeria Achieves 63% Drop in Tuberculosis Deaths by 2024

Nigeria has reported a significant 63% reduction in tuberculosis (TB) deaths between 2015 and 2024, as revealed by Dr. Dan Gadzama, the Director of the Public Health Department of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

This achievement was announced during an official World TB Day event held on March 24, 2026, in Mabushi, a suburb of Abuja. The country has also recorded an impressive treatment success rate of 94%, indicating that TB is curable when detected early and treated properly.

Despite the global challenges posed by TB, which affected an estimated 10.7 million people and resulted in 1.23 million deaths in 2024, Nigeria has made notable progress under the leadership of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control Programme (NTBLCP). The country recorded 467,000 TB cases in 2025, the highest in its history, reflecting improved case detection and stronger programmatic implementation.

Abolaji Akinola, representing the NTBLCP, urged the public to take advantage of free TB testing and counseling services.
