WHO Calls for Increased Funding to Combat Tuberculosis in Nigeria

During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Dr. Mya Ngon of the World Health Organization called on Nigeria to enhance domestic funding and community engagement in the fight against tuberculosis (TB). She noted that while progress has been made, significant gaps remain, particularly in reaching underserved populations vulnerable to TB infection and poor treatment outcomes.

Dr. Ngon highlighted the theme for 2025, "End TB," led by the Federal Ministry of Health, and emphasized the importance of sustainable investment and collective action to combat TB, which affects millions. She stressed that Nigeria should not rely solely on external funding, especially as global fund support is declining.

Dr. Ngon reaffirmed WHO's commitment to providing technical guidance and developing policies based on global best practices to improve patient outcomes. She also called for stronger partnerships among government, civil society, and communities to achieve national TB targets and reduce stigma associated with the disease.
