NIMC Confirms Security of Nigeria's NIN Database Amid Claims

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has refuted allegations regarding a breach of Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database, calling the claims false. The Commission stated that a video circulating on social media was an outdated report from 2024 that had already been debunked.

In a statement from Kayode Adegoke, NIMC's Head of Corporate Communications, the Commission assured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure, emphasizing its "robust, multi-layered security infrastructure" designed to protect personal information in line with international best practices. NIMC expressed concern over the spread of unverified information, warning that it could mislead the public and incite unnecessary panic.

The Commission introduced NIN Authentication (NINAuth), a suite of verification services that requires explicit consent from NIN holders before sharing their information. This initiative aligns with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, aimed at ensuring the lawful processing of personal data.
