NISO Reduces Nigeria's Power Transmission Losses to 7%

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), led by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Abdu Bello, has announced a reduction in transmission losses from 10% to 7.05% over the past year. This reduction translates to a financial impact of approximately N5 billion to N8 billion monthly due to transmission inefficiencies.

Bello disclosed these details during NISO's first anniversary celebration at its headquarters in Utako, Abuja. The organization was established on April 30, 2024, following the unbundling of transmission companies under the Nigerian Electricity Act of 2023.

Bello emphasized that the high transmission loss factor has significant financial implications for the power sector, which remains one of the greatest challenges. NISO's operational measures are yielding results, with a target to further reduce losses to between five and six percent.

The organization is also focusing on digitizing grid operations and enhancing real-time monitoring capabilities to improve overall efficiency in the electricity market.
