Nigeria's Power Sector Loses N8bn Monthly to Inefficiencies

Nigeria's power sector incurs losses of N5 billion to N8 billion monthly due to transmission inefficiencies, as reported by Abdu Bello, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). During the organization's first anniversary celebration on Wednesday in Abuja, Bello highlighted that the transmission loss factor is alarmingly high, nearing 10 percent.

However, measures have been initiated to reduce this loss to between five and six percent. NISO, established on April 30, 2024, aims to stabilize the electricity market and enhance operational efficiency.

The organization is working closely with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to implement supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, which will enable real-time monitoring of the grid. Additionally, NISO is focusing on digitizing grid operations and enhancing compliance among distribution companies to tackle recurring system collapses.

The goal is to achieve full visibility of the national grid by the end of the year.
