NISO Expands Coordination Role in Nigeria's Power Sector

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) is broadening its responsibilities from managing the national grid to coordinating a decentralized power industry that includes state markets and private network owners. Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, the managing director/chief executive officer of NISO, announced this at the Africa Energy Leadership Summit 2026 in Lagos.
He explained that the Electricity Act 2023 has transformed Nigeria's power industry by allowing state governments to create and regulate their own electricity markets. This shift has led to the emergence of multiple electricity markets alongside the national market, incorporating independent generation and distribution investments, renewable energy, and private investors.
Mohammed emphasized the need for NISO to adapt to these changes, addressing challenges such as harmonizing independently developed networks with the national grid and ensuring consistent technical standards. He reiterated that NISO's foundational duties remain essential while evolving into a neutral technical integrator and market facilitator.
