NITP Urges Action on Lekki-Epe Flooding Solutions

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP), under the leadership of outgoing Chairman Oladele Akindele, has urged for immediate action to address flooding issues in the Lekki-Epe corridor, which is situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Lagoon. During a press conference held on the sidelines of the NITP’s 2026 Pre-Annual General Meeting, Akindele stated that drainage solutions should prioritize directing water into the Lagoon rather than the ocean.

He noted that much of Lagos is below sea level, making flash floods a persistent challenge. Akindele recommended that the state government study successful flood management strategies from places like the Netherlands and New Orleans.

He highlighted the role of blocked drainage channels in exacerbating flooding and called for public awareness, monitoring, and punitive measures against offenders. Akindele also supported the government's initiative to deploy specialized sweeping machines and advocated for increased local government involvement and public-private partnerships in urban planning.
