NLC Demands Wage Increase Amid Rising Fuel Prices

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, has called for an immediate wage award to help workers cope with the rising cost of living exacerbated by skyrocketing fuel prices, which have reached between N1,170 and N1,300 per liter. The NLC warns against the mismanagement of an anticipated N30 trillion oil windfall expected from the current Middle East conflict, which could significantly impact Nigeria's economy.

They emphasize that millions of Nigerian workers are suffering under the burden of inflation and stagnant wages, which they describe as mere stipends. The NLC also urges the federal and state governments to implement tax relief for low-income earners and to ensure transparency in cash transfers to vulnerable populations.

They stress the importance of social dialogue and demand that the government take action to prevent further impoverishment of citizens, asserting that the primary duty of the government is to ensure the welfare of its people.
