NLC Demands Tax Relief Amid Rising Petrol Prices

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, has called for urgent government intervention to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerian workers due to a recent spike in petrol prices, which have surged from N1,170 to N1,300 per liter. The NLC warns that if immediate measures are not taken, the nation risks severe social unrest.

The organization accuses the government of neglecting the impact of volatile global oil prices exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East crisis, which has significantly affected Nigeria's downstream petroleum sector. The NLC demands immediate wage awards, cost of living allowances, and tax relief for low-income earners.

They emphasize the need for the rehabilitation and operation of public refineries to stabilize prices and reduce dependency on global market fluctuations. The NLC's statement highlights the urgent need for action to prevent further suffering among workers and their families, as rising fuel costs contribute to increased food inflation and transport burdens.
