NLC Files Complaint Against Nigeria at ILC for Labor Violations

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by President Joe Ajaero, has submitted a petition to the International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, accusing the Nigerian government of violating the Trade Union Convention No. 98. The NLC claims that workers in Nigeria face persistent violations of their rights to organize and bargain collectively.

The petition highlights a pattern of intimidation, violence, and discrimination against trade union leaders, including recent incidents in Osun State where union leaders were reportedly assaulted. The NLC requests that the ILC find Nigeria in breach of its obligations under the convention and urges the government to cease interference with the NLC's operations, particularly in Edo State, where the NLC's secretariat is reportedly under occupation.

The NLC also seeks the establishment of a clear timeline for labor law reforms in Nigeria to ensure compliance with international standards. The allegations include a lack of investigation into violent attacks against union members and the non-payment of salaries and pension arrears.
