NLC Halts FCT Operations Over Teachers' Promotion Dispute

Nigeria Labour Congress shut down schools, hospitals and government offices in Abuja on October 7 after the FCT Administration failed to resolve teachers'…

The Nigeria Labour Congress, Federal Capital Territory Council, has ordered an indefinite work stoppage across the nation's capital, effective Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The industrial action directs workers in both public and private sector establishments to cease operations until the union's demands are addressed by the FCT Administration.

Schools, hospitals, and government offices have been affected by the directive. The strike follows the expiration of a seven-day deadline issued by the NLC to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on September 8, 2026.

During this period, the FCT Administration did not adequately respond to the union's grievances, prompting union officials to proceed with the action. NLC FCT Council Chairman Knabayi S.

Adalo announced the decision following an emergency State Executive Council meeting held at Labour House, Abuja. Teachers' career progression and welfare remain the central issues driving the action.

The union has raised concerns about promotion policies, career stagnation, and the handling of school directors' redeployment. A controversial vacancy clause affecting teachers' advancement has also been flagged as a point of contention between the union and the FCT Administration.

The union directed all workers under the FCT Administration's purview to remain away from their duty stations without a specified end date. Affected sectors include education, health, and civil service operations across the territory.

The NLC has indicated that the strike will remain in effect until negotiations with the FCT Administration produce satisfactory outcomes on the identified labour matters.
