NLC Issues Strike Ultimatum Over Teachers' Promotions

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Federal Capital Territory Council, has threatened an indefinite strike across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) if the Federal Capital Territory Administration does not resolve outstanding grievances related to teachers' promotions within seven days. This ultimatum was communicated in a letter dated September 8, 2026, addressed to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and signed by NLC FCT Council Chairman Knabayi S.

The grievances stem from the FCT Administration's failure to address issues raised by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, particularly concerning the promotion of teachers, treatment of educational agency directors, and the application of the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers in Nigeria Act, 2022.

The NLC demands the removal of the vacancy requirement for teacher promotions, arguing it causes career stagnation. They also seek to allow qualified teachers who missed the 2025 promotion examination to participate in the upcoming 2026 exercise.

The situation escalated after teachers protested against the vacancy-based promotion system in July 2025.
