Ogun State Faces Doctor Shortage: 1 Doctor for 7,500 Residents

At a press conference in Abeokuta on Thursday, Dr. Luqman Ogunjimi, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), revealed that Ogun State has a critical shortage of healthcare professionals, with only about 1,200 doctors available for an estimated population of nine million residents.

This results in a troubling ratio of one doctor for every 7,500 residents. Ogunjimi emphasized that despite the temptation for many doctors to emigrate abroad, the remaining healthcare workers are facing unwarranted attacks and challenges.

He stated that Ogun State requires between 5,000 and 10,000 doctors to adequately serve its growing population. He urged the government and the public to prioritize the welfare of healthcare workers who have chosen to remain in the state, acknowledging their commitment to providing care despite the significant manpower shortage.
