Ogun NMA Reports 1,200 Doctors for 9 Million Residents

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Ogun State chapter, has raised concerns over a critical shortage of medical doctors, revealing that only about 1,200 doctors are available to serve an estimated population of nine million residents. Dr.

Ogunjimi Luqman Opeoluwa, the NMA state chairman, made this announcement during a press conference in Abeokuta on Thursday, coinciding with the 2026 NMA Annual Scientific Conference. He highlighted the inadequate doctor-to-patient ratio, which is significantly below global standards, and praised the commitment of doctors who remain in Nigeria despite challenging conditions.

Dr. Ogunjimi called on the Ogun State Government to enhance the welfare of healthcare workers, emphasizing that improved remuneration and working conditions could mitigate the ongoing brain drain in the health sector.

He acknowledged the government's efforts, such as the implementation of the Professional Allowance Table for specialist doctors, while also urging the state to address the issue of multiple taxation affecting private hospitals by harmonizing levies imposed by various agencies.
