NNPC and NIPetGE Advocate AI in Nigeria's Oil Sector

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Nigerian Institute of Petroleum and Gas Engineering (NIPetGE) are promoting the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to improve operations in Nigeria's oil and gas industry. This initiative was discussed during a meeting in Abuja, attended by NIPetGE President Prisca Kanebi and NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer Bayo Ojulari, along with Executive Vice President of Gas Power New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye.

The meeting focused on the future of Nigeria's hydrocarbon industry amidst global energy transition concerns. NNPCL acknowledged NIPetGE's role in policy advocacy and technical development within the sector.

Kanebi recommended establishing a national center for intelligent energy systems to support the deployment of AI, IoT, and robotics across the petroleum value chain. The institute also proposed a hydrocarbon-linked emissions trading system and fiscal incentives to support local manufacturing in the oil and gas sector, emphasizing the need for stronger collaboration between industry and academia.
