NNPC Targets 600Tcf Gas Reserves to Boost Economy

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) is actively pursuing strategies to elevate Nigeria's status as a global gas hub, with a target to increase the country's proven gas reserves from over 215 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) to above 600 Tcf. Olalekan Ogunleye, NNPC’s executive vice president for Gas, Power & New Energy, announced this initiative during the 2026 Gas Technology & Exhibition Conference (GASTECH) held in Bangkok, Thailand, on September 14.
Ogunleye stated that the Gas Master Plan is designed to facilitate this growth, focusing on increasing production to 10 billion standard cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2027 and 12 Bcf/d by 2030. This plan is aligned with the Petroleum Industry Act and the Decade of Gas Framework, aiming to enhance domestic industrialization and expand Nigeria's presence in international gas markets.
The initiative seeks to overcome historical challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and funding issues.
