NNPP Wins By-Election in Kano, Exposes APC’s Weakness as Party Members Call for Unity

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) won a by-election in Kano on August 16, exposing the All Progressives Congress (APC)'s weakness. The APC had claimed victory in the supplementary poll, but NNPP candidate Ali Hassan Kiyawa emerged victorious, defeating APC's Ahmad Muhammad Kadamu.

The election was held following the death of former lawmaker Halilu Ibrahim Kundila in April 2024. The results highlighted deepening cracks within the APC, with internal dissatisfaction and calls for unity dominating discussions.

Party members expressed frustration over poor coordination, voter apathy, and lack of strong mobilization. APC stalwarts like Murtala Saleh Shanono and Alhaji Musa Bagwai lamented the party's divided state and accused party leaders of sabotage.

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad called for unity to revive the party's fortunes in Kano, one of its strongest strongholds.
