ICPC Confirms No New Detention Order for El-Rufai

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) issued a statement on March 17, 2026, clarifying that there is no fresh detention order for former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai. The statement, made by ICPC spokesperson John Odei, aimed to correct media reports suggesting that the commission sought a new court order for El-Rufai's detention.

El-Rufai's legal team filed an application on March 6, 2026, to overturn a court order that renewed his remand issued on March 5, 2026. During court proceedings, his counsel requested an adjournment to respond to the commission's position, leading to a new hearing date set for March 31, 2026.

The ICPC's initial remand order allowed for a 14-day detention to investigate allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. Following the expiration of this order, the commission applied for an extension to complete its investigation, which the court granted on March 5, 2026.

El-Rufai remains in custody under the ICPC's remand order.
