El-Rufai Detained by ICPC After EFCC Interrogation

Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after being interrogated on Wednesday. He had arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Monday and was questioned until Wednesday.

Following his release, he was taken into custody by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC). El-Rufai faces three counts of charges filed by the federal government at the Federal High Court in Abuja, which include allegations of unlawfully intercepting phone communications of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, during a television interview on February 13, 2026.

The charges cite violations of the Cybercrime Prohibition, Prevention, etc. Amendment Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.

Additionally, the Department of State Services (DSS) has reopened an investigation into the 2019 disappearance of a lecturer, Abubakar Idris, known as Dadiyata. El-Rufai's passport was recently seized to prevent him from traveling abroad.
