Nigeria's Education Minister Unveils New NYSC Rules

On Thursday, during a keynote address at a national capacity-building program, Nigerian Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa announced new stringent rules mandating that no one without a National Education Record Database (NERD) can participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

This initiative is part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing the integrity of academic records and compliance across the education sector. The government has taken decisive steps to curb certificate fraud, following reports of Nigerians obtaining questionable degrees from unaccredited institutions abroad.

Alausa emphasized the importance of reliable data for effective governance and policy-making. He praised President Bola Tinubu for pursuing necessary reforms and announced the establishment of an annual National Laureate Prize program to recognize outstanding academic research.

The NERD system will be enforced within four months, preserving nearly 100,000 digital student submissions from 250 institutions and supporting real-time credential verification for 133,000 students.
