Nkem Owoh Reflects on Fame and Nollywood Trends

Nkem Owoh, a 71-year-old Nollywood icon also known as Osuofia, revealed that he never intended to become an actor. In a recent podcast episode, he discussed how his global stardom ultimately robbed him of personal freedom.

Owoh shared his experiences, noting that while he initially preferred to remain behind the scenes as a scriptwriter, he was pressured into the spotlight due to his sharp wit off-camera. He expressed frustration with contemporary trends in Nollywood, where directors and producers often prioritize social media metrics over actual dramatic skills.

Owoh stated that this shift poses no real threat to the profession, asserting that internet popularity cannot substitute for genuine artistic ability. His comments come amid a wave of frustration among Nigerian actors regarding the industry's focus on physical appearance and digital clout rather than acting talent.

Owoh's career includes winning the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Lead Role in 2008 for his unforgettable performance in a classic feature.
