North-West Seeks ₦20bn for Climate Initiatives and Youth Training

Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), announced that the North-West region is seeking ₦20 billion in climate financing over the next four years to combat flooding, drought, migration, and other environmental issues. This announcement was made during the inaugural Northwest Climate Summit at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Yakasai outlined plans to establish a regional climate marketplace, a climate academy, and a climate fund. The climate marketplace will allow local governments and states to showcase their climate programs to attract partnerships and funding.
The proposed Climate Academy aims to train 10,000 youths in climate resilience and sustainability. The climate fund will mobilize resources to address the region's climate-related challenges.
Yakasai emphasized that this summit is the first of its kind in Nigeria and Africa, organized in partnership with the Northwest Governors Forum and the Northwest Development Commission. Discussions from this summit are expected to influence Nigeria's participation in the upcoming United Nations climate change summit.
