King Harald V of Norway Dies at 89, Crown Prince Haakon Succeeds

King Harald V of Norway passed away at the age of 89 on August 28, 2023, after a prolonged period of ill health, as announced by the Norwegian Royal Palace. He died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital at 6:35 am.

Following his death, the Norwegian flag at the Royal Palace was lowered to half-mast, and members of the public gathered to pay their respects. King Harald had been hospitalized since August 17 due to haemolytic anaemia, and his health had deteriorated sharply the day before his death, prompting family members, including Crown Prince Haakon and Queen Sonja, to rush to his bedside.

King Harald, who became king in 1991, was known for promoting stability and unity in Norway. He had faced several health challenges in recent years but remained opposed to abdication.

His death follows a series of health setbacks, including a hospitalization in February for an infection and dehydration.
