Nigeria Records 5 Million Births Annually, NPC Reports

The National Population Commission (NPC) announced that Nigeria records no fewer than five million births annually, with the majority of these births unregistered. Chairman Alhaji Aminu Yussuf disclosed this information during the launch of birth and death registration in Minna, Niger State.

He noted that birth registration coverage is around 57%, while death registration is below 20%, which hampers legal identity and reliable data for national planning. To address these challenges, the NPC has established 4,011 functional registration centers across Nigeria's 774 local government areas and plans to expand this network to about 8,000.

This initiative is part of the nationwide digital birth and death registration under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system. Yussuf emphasized that this digital innovation represents a significant reform in civil registration, aiming to enhance service delivery and ensure accurate documentation of births and deaths in Nigeria.
