Niger NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration

Niger NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration

The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced the digital registration of births and deaths in Niger State, as announced by the Chairman, Dr Aminù Yussuf, in Minna. This initiative aligns with the nationwide digital birth and death registration under the E-CRVS system.

Represented by Mallam Musa Sabo, a director in the Niger State office, Yussuf stated that this effort will strengthen civil registration, enhance vital statistics generation, and ensure accurate documentation of every birth and death in Nigeria. He emphasized that civil registration is crucial for reliable national statistics that inform public policy and development planning.

Currently, Nigeria records approximately 5 million births annually, but many remain unregistered, with birth registration coverage at about 57% and death registration below 20%. To tackle these challenges, the NPC has established 4,011 functional registration centers across the 774 local government areas and plans to expand this network to about 8,000.
