Nigerian Shipper Association Rejects Arbitrary Port Charge Hike, Calls for Suspension

The Nigerian Shipper Association (NSAN) has formally rejected the recent increase in port service charges approved by shipping companies, citing the hike as arbitrary and detrimental to the ease of doing business agenda. NSAN submitted a joint position paper to the Nigerian Shipper Council (NSC) urging the immediate suspension of the new charges.

The NSAN argues that the unilateral decision to raise tariffs without proper consultation represents a serious breach of regulatory trust and could lead to higher import costs, consumer price pressures, and worsened inflation. The association warns of grave economic consequences and calls for a broader consultative process to reflect the interests of stakeholders in the maritime value chain.
