NSC Allocates ₦300m Training Grants for 2028 Olympics

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has disbursed approximately ₦300 million in quarterly training grants to more than 31 elite Nigerian athletes as part of the preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This latest disbursement marks the fifth since the introduction of the quarterly training grants policy in 2025 and the third payment made in 2026, totaling over ₦1 billion released in the past two years.
The NSC’s Elite and Podium Board administers the initiative, providing grants of $10,000, $5,000, and $3,000 based on athletes' performances and assessments against scientific performance indicators. NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, emphasized the commission's commitment to athlete welfare and the importance of financial support for training.
He noted that these grants were part of the mandates from President Bola Tinubu to ensure adequate financial backing for Nigerian athletes in international competitions. Olopade stated that financial stability allows athletes to focus on their training, which is crucial for achieving success at major events.
