NUC Forms Committee to Combat Illegal Universities in Nigeria

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has reconstituted a committee to combat the proliferation of illegal universities in Nigeria. The committee, inaugurated by the NUC's Executive Secretary Abdullahi Ribadu, aims to safeguard the credibility of university education in the country.

Ribadu emphasized the importance of maintaining standards and protecting the integrity of Nigeria's higher education system. The committee will focus on identifying and investigating degree mills, gathering evidence for prosecution, and verifying claims of affiliations with foreign and local universities.

It will collaborate with security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Police Force, to shut down illegal institutions and prosecute offenders. Additionally, the NUC plans to lead a public sensitization campaign and implement policy recommendations to strengthen regulatory responses against illegal universities across Nigeria.
