NUC Approves 33 New Universities, Totaling 309 in Nigeria

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of 33 new universities in Nigeria, increasing the total number of universities in the country to 309. This approval includes 20 newly established private institutions and 13 universities owned by state and federal governments.

The new federal universities are located in Rivers, Kaduna, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, and Zamfara states. Additionally, state governments are expanding their university systems, with new institutions created in Niger, Benue, Cross River, and Imo states.

Notably, the new federal universities include the Federal University of Environmental Technology in Rivers State and the Federal University of Agricultural Development Studies in Osun State. The list of new private universities includes the Leadership University in Abuja and the Jimoh Babalola University in Ilorin, Kwara State.

This expansion reflects a growing commitment to higher education in Nigeria, with the total number of private universities now standing at 168 nationwide.
