NUT Calls for Implementation of Teachers' Salary Scale

The National Union of Teachers (NUT) has expressed disappointment over the Federal Government's failure to implement the special salary scale for teachers in basic and secondary schools, which was approved during the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022. Kizito Kalu, the NUT National Deputy President, made this statement in Abuja while delivering the 2026 World Teachers Day address at Eagle Square.
He highlighted the importance of adequate remuneration for teachers, stating that it should reflect their responsibilities and the current economic realities in Nigeria. Kalu pointed out that despite the approval of the special salary scale and other welfare packages four years ago, implementation has yet to begin.
He urged the government to take action to actualize the new salary regime to boost teachers' morale and dignity. Additionally, Kalu called for improved working conditions, emphasizing that teachers cannot perform optimally in overcrowded classrooms with inadequate resources.
World Teachers Day has been celebrated since October 5, 1994.
