Tax Ombud Dr. Nwabueze Advocates for Tax Literacy

Dr. John Nwabueze, the Tax Ombud and Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud, called on financial journalists in Nigeria to promote tax literacy and enhance understanding of the country's tax reforms. This appeal was made during the 36th Anniversary Conference of the Finance Correspondents Association of Nigeria (FICAN) in Lagos, where he discussed the theme, “Building Taxpayer Confidence and Trust in Nigeria’s Tax Reform Agenda.” Dr. Nwabueze outlined five key areas for journalists to focus on, including explaining tax laws, examining implementation, distinguishing lawful tax planning from evasion, investigating administrative fairness, and promoting financial literacy.

He stressed the importance of the media in informing the public and holding institutions accountable. Additionally, he commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to reforming Nigeria’s tax framework, which led to the establishment of the Office of the Tax Ombud aimed at fostering taxpayer confidence.
