Tax Ombud Dr. Nwabueze Promotes Fairness in Tax System

Dr. John Nwabueze, the Tax Ombud and Chief Executive of the Office of the Tax Ombud, reiterated the Office's commitment to promoting fairness and transparency within Nigeria's tax system during the third-quarter Breakfast Meeting with business editors in Lagos.

He outlined significant milestones, including the launch of a digital complaints portal, a case management system, a toll-free call centre, and SMS callback services, which have improved taxpayer access to services. Within three months, the Office received over 20 genuine complaints, resolving eight within the statutory 14-day period.

Nwabueze mentioned the expansion of the Office's capacity to handle complex tax matters and plans to establish offices across all six geopolitical zones to enhance grassroots accessibility. He emphasized the need to address multiple taxation issues, particularly at state and local government levels, and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for establishing an independent tax ombudsman institution to strengthen voluntary tax compliance and public trust in tax administration.
