Obasanjo calls Atiku VP pick his greatest mistake; Atiku fires back

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has publicly declared that selecting Atiku Abubakar as his vice presidential running mate in the 1999 election ranks among his most consequential errors in office. Obasanjo made the statement during a Friday event in Lagos, speaking at a fireside discussion with entertainer Charles Oputa at the launch of Oputa's foundation and memoir.

Atiku responded swiftly through his spokesperson, characterizing Obasanjo's remarks as an attempt to distort historical record. Atiku defended his decision to oppose Obasanjo's bid to extend his presidency beyond constitutional limits, framing his resistance as a matter of constitutional principle rather than personal disloyalty.

He stated that he prioritized Nigeria's democratic framework over maintaining favour with his former boss. The public exchange reflects a rift that has defined their relationship since the end of their joint tenure in 2007.

According to Atiku's statement, Obasanjo's sustained animosity stems directly from the former vice president's refusal to support the third-term initiative during the Obasanjo administration. Atiku expressed sadness at what he characterized as Obasanjo allowing personal grievance to override historical accuracy.

Atiku maintained that he bears no regret for his role in blocking the third-term effort, emphasizing his commitment to Nigeria's Constitution. He also highlighted his contributions to the nation's economic management during their shared tenure.

The dispute between the two former leaders underscores tensions that have periodically surfaced in Nigerian politics since the transition from military to democratic rule in 1999.
