Obasanjo Critiques Nigeria's Security and Governance Failures

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo addressed Nigeria's deteriorating security situation during a recent event, emphasizing the government's inability to protect lives and property. He attributed the country's security crisis to factors such as arms proliferation, poor governance, and the influx of mercenaries following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi.

Obasanjo criticized the current administration led by Bola Tinubu for its handling of relations with Niger, particularly following a recent coup, describing the government's response as damaging to regional cooperation. He noted that Nigeria and Niger share deep-rooted connections, and the government's actions could undermine long-standing economic and cultural ties.

Obasanjo dismissed the National Council of State as ineffective, stating that its meetings often result in little actionable advice. He also criticized the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) for its structural inefficiencies and corruption, highlighting failed attempts to involve private investors in the refinery sector.

Obasanjo warned against emerging authoritarian tendencies that could harm Nigeria's democratic development.
