Obi Condemns Arrest of Cleric, Warns of Democracy Threats

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and ex-president of the Labour Party, condemned the reported arrest of prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, describing it as a troubling sign for Nigeria's democracy. The arrest occurred shortly after Sheikh Umar hosted a Sunday event in Kaduna.

Obi expressed concern that this incident reflects a broader pattern of intolerance and repression within the country, which threatens civil liberties and freedom of speech. He warned that citizens perceived as political opponents face harassment and unnecessary persecution, which cannot be allowed to continue.

Obi stressed the importance of protecting fundamental rights and called on the government to uphold the rule of law and democratic principles, urging respectful treatment of citizens.
