NDC Introduces Anti-Defection Pact Ahead of Elections

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) plans to introduce a strict anti-defection policy that mandates candidates seeking election under its platform to sign an indemnity affidavit. This policy, unveiled on Tuesday at the party's national secretariat in Abuja, aims to safeguard the party's electoral mandate and strengthen internal discipline.

Prominent members, including presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, were notably absent during the signing ceremony. NDC National Chairman Mose Cleopa emphasized that the policy is a response to the trend of politicians defecting to rival parties after winning elections.

He cited the Labour Party's experience in the 2023 elections as a justification for the new policy. The NDC's legal advisory team has prepared the necessary documents, including the affidavit, which all candidates must complete to receive the party's ticket.

The policy reflects the party's commitment to ensuring that electoral mandates belong to the party rather than individual candidates.
