Obi and Kwankwaso Join Nigeria Democratic Congress Ahead of 2027

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDC was registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on February 5, 2026, following a legal dispute that began in 2017.

The party aims to establish an interim national leadership structure pending its inaugural national convention scheduled for May 9, 2026, in Abuja. Key appointments include Cleopa Zuwogh as national chairman and Ikenna Enekweizu as national secretary.

The NDC plans to promote inclusivity and youth participation in governance, with a focus on electoral reforms. The party will also engage in a nationwide membership registration drive and is expected to adopt its constitution and ratify leadership positions during the convention.

The success of the NDC in influencing the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections will depend on its ability to consolidate its structure and form effective coalitions.
