Obi of Onitsha Raises Alarm on Poverty and Insecurity in Nigeria Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe, highlighted the increasing poverty and insecurity in Nigeria during the 2025 Ofala festival in Anambra State. He warned the political class about neglecting governance for early political alliances before the 2027 elections.

Achebe noted a 40% rise in poverty rates from 2018 to 2023, affecting over 104 million Nigerians. He urged transparent and corruption-free distribution of relief materials to vulnerable citizens.

The monarch also raised concerns about the ongoing violence affecting the agricultural sector, citing the case of separatist agitator Simon Ekpa.
