Wike Advises Obi to Focus on 2031 Presidential Bid

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, advised Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), to forget about the 2027 presidential election and instead prepare for 2031. Wike stated that the political circumstances that contributed to Obi's strong performance in the 2023 elections have changed.

During an appearance on TVC’s Journalists Hangout, Wike defended his support for President Bola Tinubu's re-election, arguing that the political landscape is different from that of 2023. He emphasized that leadership involves making tough decisions, referencing Tinubu's removal of the fuel subsidy, which he believes has not hindered the availability of petroleum products.

Wike dismissed the notion that opposition candidates are gaining popularity based solely on resonating messages, urging a broader analysis of political dynamics across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. He specifically noted that Obi would not dominate the South-South region as he did in 2023 due to the emergence of the Rainbow Coalition and changing political alignments.
