Obi Vows to Restore Fuel Subsidy While Tackling Corruption

The NDC presidential candidate says he would bring back the fuel subsidy regime if elected in 2027, but only after eliminating corruption from its…

During a BBC interview, Peter Obi—the Nigeria Democratic Congress's presidential hopeful—announced plans to reinstate Nigeria's fuel subsidy should he prevail in the 2027 presidential race. The former Anambra State governor framed this as opposing President Bola Tinubu's existing energy policy, which eliminated subsidies.

His declaration represents a meaningful recalibration of his earlier public remarks regarding this subject. Obi's core argument separates the subsidy mechanism from the dishonest conduct woven throughout its execution.

He maintains that the fuel subsidy framework itself poses no fundamental difficulty; what has harmed Nigeria's finances is the graft entrenched in how authorities have run it. Stripping away such corrupt elements, under his reasoning, would solve why the regime has failed so badly.

Turning to his broader anti-corruption agenda, Obi leveraged the BBC platform to reaffirm his determination to confront malfeasance throughout state institutions. Personal responsibility forms the bedrock of his strategy, he explained—contending that when political leaders and their households abandon thievery and wrongdoing, Nigeria would shed roughly fifty percent of its corruption.

His assessment of former President Muhammadu Buhari's tenure differed sharply, arguing that insufficient command over his government prevented Buhari from fulfilling similar anti-graft commitments. Obi stressed that he would maintain firm command should voters choose him.

Obi underscored that those serving in administrative roles must prioritize ethical conduct as a prerequisite for any subsidy system restoration effort. Officials cannot authentically overhaul a graft-ridden structure while simultaneously gaining from its malfeasance, he maintained.

Through these BBC statements, Obi provided his most comprehensive public explanation of his intended strategy for tackling both the subsidy dilemma and governance integrity in a hypothetical 2027 government.
