Rising Threats in Nigerian Political Rhetoric

The political atmosphere in Nigeria is deteriorating as politicians increasingly resort to violent rhetoric against opponents and voters. Senator Francis Fadahunsi was summoned by the police after a viral video where he appeared to tell APC supporters to "kill" members of the Accord Party, later claiming his words were misinterpreted.

In Kuje, area council chairman Danjuma Samuel Shekwolo reportedly told residents to support the APC or leave the area. In Borno, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development Sainna Buba threatened to flog opponents and cut off fingers of dissenters.

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi warned local government chairmen that failure to deliver votes for the APC in 2027 would result in their removal. Additionally, Yobe APC chairman Muhammad Gadaka suggested women should leave their husbands if they prevented them from voting for the APC, offering to pay their bride price.

Following backlash, he claimed his comments were meant as a joke. These incidents reflect a troubling trend of coercive language in Nigerian politics.
